For the past couple of weeks I've been missing at home!?!!
For the past 7 schools days I have worked 6 of them! Half of those days were early morning phone calls. This means that knew ahead of time (which I love) for 3 days and 3 of the days I was called at 6am (which I don't love so much).
It's $ so I'm not complaining, but it sure bits into my "Stay at Home Mom" status! and my workout time, and my getting things done at home time and my blog time ...... I've always said I don't know how Moms work and get it all done! Now I know they don't!
My experiences with subbing have not been all good either. I had one class that I had to call in principle in for a class attitude adjustment, thankfully for me the next class I subbed in was Heavenly!
and I'll be subbing tomorrow!

Life on Thursday ~ Adventures in Subbing addition
Today was my first full day of subbing this year.
I was in kindergarten, I'm always reluctant to go into kindergarten so early in the year.
AND I'd signed on for 2 days of this class! If it was bad the first day, it was going to be BAD the second day!
Much to my joy this class was great! They sat quietly, while I gathered my wits. That's HUGE in kindergarten. They didn't tell me all day "That's not the Mrs. ***** does it" That's HUGE in kindergarten. They didn't make noise while we transitioned between specials. That's HUGE in kindergarten!
I will tell you the that this class had interesting first names ... Truman, Johnson, Adeline, Koumorie, Kenny are just a few.
After school G and I went to watch Megan play volleyball. They play the best out of 5, and they played all 5 games before winning. It was fun to watch her.
W called from North Dakota, he got "put on crew". He was hired as a floater, but even before he went to work he had a spot on a crew. Thursday morning they told him that his crew would be on call that night. They don't ever know when they'll be called but they will be called. He got his call around 3:45am (and he starts getting paid once he's called) and he reports within 30 minutes.
BUT really that's Friday's story!

Mrs Honeybee!
Today I was subbing in Kindergarten. It's really amazing to me just how fast and how distorted little Kindergartners can change my name! Today I was Mrs Honeybee! It really depends on the child on their level of understanding my name. Some give me that quizzical look, then try to remember my name before saying it, some just rattle what they think they heard.
I think it's really a pretty great name, Mrs Honeybee. It would make the other teachers smile when they would hear my class call me!
Subbing today was a desperate call. Out of the 6 kindergarten teachers only 2 where there today and well. I don't know where all the subs were BUT I was the only one that could make it. Well, I switched my schedule after the 2nd phone call. One teacher held out a half day before she left and the other's class had about 8 or 9 kids out sick so they just divided up the rest of her class. Even at G's school he said they sent home almost an entire 5th grade class! Unfortunetly not his, the class next to his!
Good/Strange thing about this all of the sick teachers seem to have something different. My teacher had pink eye! Yes, my eyes were itchy all day once I found that out!

Life on Thursday
First things first ... it is Freezing! When we left for school this morning it was ~14!
I subbed today. I've got an on going subbing position with the lower elementary's science teacher. It's on going in the respect that she only calls me to sub for her. Now the truth is her children are grown (youngest is W's age), so she doesn't have sick kids, she isn't sick so I only sub for her when she wants a day off.
Good side of this is... I get advanced warning
Bad side of this....it's not very often.
I taught the Water cycle to 2nd and 1st graders.
Now this lady has been teaching for around 25 years, so her lesson plans aren't very sub oriented. Meaning, it's not enough for a sub. For an hour class I have 2 books to read. NOT ENOUGH. I came up with a couple of other things so I had 45 minutes worth of stuff but still I hate to sing and dance with a class. Oh, well it means that I earn my $$$. I get to go back to they same thing tomorrow but I at least have the singing and dancing down from today!
I do have to say that 1st graders just have a smell to them!?!? They smell farty all the time! OK, not all of them, but today while I was reading a book, I thought I was going to have to open a window! and I have was in a good size room, a huge room in fact... Sheeeszzz it was strong! If a class is going to stink it's going to be a first grade class!
G had a rare Thursday night game this week. They lost! They've finally gotten some more boys on their team. They had 7 to start the season, then one broke his ankle (the coach's son) and one just quite (claiming he just didn't know how to play). This put a strain on the rest of the team. They didn't have any subs and they couldn't miss. I don't what happened but they came up with 2 more players and the kid that broke his ankle got his cast off! So now that the season is almost over they have subs!
I drove through Burger King after the game and it was burgers for all!

Friday, THE puking conversation and Angel, THE man
Today I subbed in Pre School. It is a half day, and filled with children at all levels from 3 to 5. It's a mentoring class so there are bright preschoolers and then some that need some guidance. It's always fun! Fun mainly because there are 10 children and 5 adults (sometimes 6 adults).
As the children were having center play, one little boy walked by me, stopped and said,
D ~ "Andy can't eat shrimp because he'll puke, but I can have shrimp and I won't puke."
Me ~ "oh, I'm glad you can eat shrimp, I like shrimp too"
D ~ "So it doesn't make you puke?"
Me ~ "no, I'm fine eating shrimp"
D ~ " I like Shrimp and I won't puke too."
just then another boy walked by added to the conversation,
boy ~ "I can puke too"
I walked off leaving the conversation hanging.....
Last week, the doctor's nurse, Angel, the man called and left a message that Hubby's surgery #3 was "taken care of". I didn't know what that meant, and Hubby was willing to just wait until Monday's doctor's appointment to see when the surgery was, BUT I wasn't. As the Mom of the house, there are plans to be adjusted, babysitters to call, a strategy to work out, and NO, I didn't want to just wait and see!
I called the surgery scheduling department to see what day the surgery planned for. Well, the surgery wasn't on the schedule!?! So, what did Angel, the man mean by it was "taken care of"? I don't know but I took the liberty of scheduling the surgery! It will be this week! Hubby is thrilled, he would have been happy if it would have been yesterday, so this week is perfect for him.
This doesn't give me much time but let's open the war room and get the plans working and moving.

LIfe on Thursday
Today really should start with last night, Hubby came home after being away for 4 weeks. He didn't get home until around 8pm and it wore him out.
So he goes from 24 hour nursing care to.... my Life on Thursday!
up at 6:30am shower, get ready (everything except curling my hair) by 7.
come in get lunches ready for the day, wake up G, fix him breakfast, nag at him to stay on track with getting ready.
We leave at 7:40am....Aggghh, later than I'd like
Drop G off at his school, and I go to sub in Kindergarten.
It's Kindergarten on day #16 and I'm their first sub.
I hear alot of "That's not the way Mrs **** does it." and "We're suppose to be doing it this way not that way." It's a challenging morning but things fall into place by the afternoon. Either it's that or I'm just counting minutes by then and in a total stupor! At this stage in the game (stage day #16) I actually get "No, I'm not going to do that and you can't make me!" from a student. Aww that's when you love to see a para teacher come along so you can send this child to the principal! No, I didn't send him to the principal but I did send him to the rescue teacher next door for some help!
Happy Bear came to visit the class today! He tells them about good touching and bad touching. He teaches them the proper name for their privates, from the responses from my class, the boys have been taught the correct name but the girls (and the boys for that matter) had no idea what their private part was called. I didn't notice any snickering when the boys said what their private part was called, but there was alot of snickering when they were trying to guess what the girl part was! it was funny! I can add this to my adventure in Subbing book!
Off to the Book Fair (G got a must have Star War Clone wars book) and then to Walmart to pick up prescriptions! 5 of them (2 for me and 3 for hubby). Only to get a text from Hubby on the way home that said, "I don't want all those Rx, only get the Cipro" Too late! good thing, they were all on the $4 list!
I had (and always do)such a headache when I get done subbing. I came home to pop some Advil and see if Hubby had survived his day alone. Alone, just him, his special bed, his lunch box and his Internet. From 24 hour nursing care to Alone, absolutely ALONE!
Then ran off to take G to soccer practice and I walked 3.5 miles at the track. Home to eat supper, fix lunches for tomorrow (I'll be in 1st grade tomorrow) and off to bed!

Fieldtrip report
At G's school they read books, get AR points for reading book, save up AR points and buy cool stuff! or they don't save up and they buy cheap stuff!
Well, G and 85 other students had 'purchased' a field trip to watch our Women's NCAA conference's tournament today! Unbeknownest to them (before yesterday) we would get to watch a player that just graduated 'our' High School last year (with W). This added to everyone's excitement.
things I've learned on this field trip .....
*girls have blood curdling screams
*my hips are just about too wide to walk the isle of a school bus
*basketball players are about 1/2 inch from where we sat
*girls have to go the bathroom alot
*some 10 years whine too much, and ask too many questions
(ie: are we there yet?, I think this is taking too long, I can't see the clock, I spilled my water,..... and on and on and on)
*some of these kids never get out of our little town!
pictures to come!

Adventures in Subbing 09/10 #3
On Monday I subbed for what I thought was Miss Suzy in Preschool, I'd geared myself up for preschool fun (10 kids with 5 adults). When I got the school to sign in they corrected my thought .. .it was Miss Suzy in Science! I missed the preschool fun but I got to teach science to first graders.
When you teach a 'special' you teach for (generally) 30 minutes, switch classes and then teach the lesson all over again. I taught the food chain 4 times. By the end of the day, I was so confused at what I'd already taught and what I still had to teach. ALSO by the end of the day the first graders were catching on that humans aren't really the top of the food chain when I shark could eat a human .... or a "really mean dinosaur with a sharp gray beak thing" could eat a human. I was glad that was the last class because I'm not sure what I would have done if they'd all been that 'smart' or if that class had been the first one!
I got them back ... I informed them that kitties could be eaten by a coyote. This might have been a bit much for the kids that didn't live in the country. Country kids knew it was a way of life those little city girls didn't!!

November Blessing #20
This morning I'm busy googling to see who the Teacher of the year was in our state. I can't find it, of which I am not thankful for!
A teacher from the school that I work at the most was up for the award. She was the teacher of year for our region but now she was going for the top stop along with 7 others. The awards dinner was last night.
Yesterday I subbed for an Early Childhood Education program at this school so I got to attend a special surprise assembly for her. I have gotten to work with this teacher on a few occasions and I learn so much from her each time she's in the classroom with me.
So today I'm thankful for being able to work and be a stay at home mom. To get to work in a such a great school (they've had a teacher of the year finalist for the past 3 years).
There is a difference in the schools in our district and this school is certainly the cream of the crop! I love to work there because of the kids, because of the staff and because of the teachers.

November Blessing #5
It is a Blessing that I have talent for and opportunity to work.
I love to subsitute in Kindergarden.
They are forgiving, they are loving, they don't have any hidden adgendas, they love to please the teacher.
To be honest Subbing is great, I don't have to work everyday, I can still be a stay at home mom for little G, but still get to make some spending $. Not money I can really count on, but it's still spendable!

Adventures in Subbing 09/10 #2
This week started a 6 day subbing job in my favorite place Kindergarten!
Day one is a GREAT challenge. This is only day 17 of school, these children had never been to school 18 days ago ... I had to keep reminding myself! They'd gotten use to their teacher (who is a brand new teacher fresh out of college) for 16 days and then here I come in! I'm sure their little kindergarten minds are swirling.
I do have to say that it was so sweet the first morning. Their teacher is getting married and leaving on her honeymoon. She had told them that and that Mrs **** was coming in while she was gone. Well....in their little Kindergarten minds most of them got all that confused and I quickly became either Mrs Honeymoon or Mrs Honey or Mrs Moon and rarely Mrs ****. It was hard to get on to them when they're call you Mrs Honey!?!
By noon they had the name thing straighten out ... and the trouble had began.... there are 5 boys in this class that are a hand full ...and if you do the math I don't have 5 hands!
At the end of the day, I sternly chatted with the class and told them that I expected a better day tomorrow. AND I got it. I've always said it, If you're going to sub you really need to do at least 2 days in the class, Day one is HORRIBLE but it only gets better every day after that!

Adventures in Subbing 09/10 #1
This is a classic and so innocent at the same time.
The 2nd grade teacher that I've been subbing for is doing a "Favorite Book" lesson. Each student brings their favorite book and each day one book is chosen. We read the book, then the student go back to their desk and write a couple of sentences about the book and draw a picture about the book. The teacher collect these papers for a book she's putting together.
Yesterday we read the book ... they did their paper... I collected them.
Today I was moving them on the desk and I glanced a the top paper.
The student had written ....
"I lick the hole boob."
I just sat there and laughed ...

Adventures is Subbing #15
Today I subbed and it was
Wacky Wednesday!
A celebration of Dr Seuss!
I'm just sure there is double pay or at least a perk of a spa day included in todays deal!
I've never been so glad to be home in my life!

Adventures in Subbing #14
Yes, it's January but the weather was a balmy 65 degrees with a light southerly breeze! It was wonderful.
AND yes, I had recess duty.
I would say that I have recess duty 95 % of the time that I sub! It's even gotten to the stage that it's laughable, if I'm subbing then they must have recess duty.
I've been out to recess when it's blistering hot and when it's bitterly cold. The schools sit up on a hill so there is always a breeze (and sometimes breeze is putting it calmly!)
TODAY it was wonderful I was so excited to go outside this afternoon! We let them have a few minutes extra but when the rest of the kindergartner teachers came to lead them inside, they decided that that we could stay out longer! So we did, it was beautiful! Today makes up for the entire week I subbed with the weather too cold (wind chill under 25) to have outside recess.
Cold and flu season is here and it's beginning to hit the schools ~ As soon I walked in I was approached by another teacher asking if I was available to sub for her tomorrow! It not the teacher's so much but they all have sick children!
AND it seems to be everything, colds, pukey flu, high fevers, strep, you name it some one's got it. Maybe we should have a lottery to pick the date I come down with it!

Martin Luther King
When I substitute in the 2 grade class there is a 'Foster Grandma' in that class, she is a sweet little grandma that never says a word, just goes about grading her papers.
I was teaching the morning after Barack Obama was pronounced the President Elect. I asked her what she thought of that. She simply replied, "well, I guess it's good, he seems like a nice man." When I asked her about her experiences with discrimination she told of how she moved to the 'prairie' when she was 2 and didn't ever really know of anything that discriminated against her. She and her brother had gone to Memphis when they were little (which would have been in the late 40's). Their aunt took them on the bus, her brother just plopped down on the first seat he found (in the front of the bus), their aunt jerk him up by the arm and told him that he wasn't to sit in the front of the bus. That was the only time they ever knew about discrimination.
I suppose we have wild John Brown to thank for our equal rights on the prairie!
I found the closing of the speech that Dr King gave the night before his assassinated.
Here are his prophetic words......
Well, I don't know what will happen now. We've got some difficult days ahead. But it doesn't matter with me now. Because I've been to the mountaintop. And I don't mind. Like anybody, I would like to live a long life. Longevity has its place. But I'm not concerned about that now. I just want to do God's will. And He's allowed me to go up to the mountain. And I've looked over. And I've seen the promised land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the promised land. And I'm happy, tonight. I'm not worried about anything. I'm not fearing any man. Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord.
I was teaching the morning after Barack Obama was pronounced the President Elect. I asked her what she thought of that. She simply replied, "well, I guess it's good, he seems like a nice man." When I asked her about her experiences with discrimination she told of how she moved to the 'prairie' when she was 2 and didn't ever really know of anything that discriminated against her. adventures in subbing #13
Goodness what an afternoon!
First of all I was asked to only work a half day, but just any half day, FRIDAY afternoon half day and not just FRIDAY afternoon but a FRIDAY afternoon with snow on the ground half day! I wasn't looking forward to this at all. The kids were going to be wild! I just kept tell myself it was only 3 hours, I can do anything for 3 hours!
I get into the class room at 11:55, was met by the teacher with her coat on her arm and her keys in hand. I apologized for cutting it close, she being very sweet said it was "no, problem" she was headed off to Indiana to hug her grandchildren! AND that there was a Student teacher in the classroom so all I needed to do was sit there and do crowd control!
WHAT? did I hear her correct? Student Teacher, sit there, crowd control? As I stood there trying to register what had just been said, I saw this young girl in front of the class. I could have swore she had an aura around her ..... a Student teacher aura. It was true I had a student teacher and all I had to do was sit there and do crowd control.
Even the crowd control turned out to be nothing. It seems that the 4th grade do their 'specials' (out of the classroom classes in the afternoon). These students were in the classroom for about 45 minutes this afternoon. Here I'll do the math for you I get paid $95 per day, half day $42.50. So I made just under a dollar a minute today! Well, not really but for teacher student time I did!
I like Friday afternoons after all!

adventures in subbing #12
Yesterday as I sat at G's first basketball game of the season there were a lot of kids that I know because of subbing. At one point I had a couple of little girls from one of the kindergarten class that I'm a regular in sitting next to me. They also have brothers G's age. They, as all little girls are, being silly and fussing over me then at one point they asked to sit on my lap. I allowed that. Two girls one lap.
W, who had been sitting behind me a couple of rows, came up to me and asked, "What's with you Mom, do you even know those kids?" I'm sure he was having a "Just How can this be?" moment.

Adventures in Subbing #11
Subbing this week has been bitter sweet.
I really couldn't image that I'd be teaching this week, with all teachers have to do the week before the end of the quarter.
I received a call early Monday morning asking if I could clear my schedule and teach a Kindergarten class all week.
Sadly and tragically their teacher's husband was killed last weekend in a car wreck.
The principal had called all their parents before Monday morning so I didn't have any questions, just little sweet girls telling me that they knew why I was there and not Mrs A.
I can now see why people teach. When you're only in a classroom for a day or two, it's ciaos and sometimes a bumpy ride (I could write a book about the "Misadventures in Subbing"!)~ but a week in kindergarten~ it's fun.
AND NOT just any week but the week before Christmas no less!
This post is also to tell you that ~
If you're expecting a Christmas gift from me I haven't gotten it yet!
If you're expecting a Christmas card from me I haven't mailed it yet!
BUT I have next week, RIGHT?
that is IF I don't get the cold, or strep, or any other ailment
going around in this little fun kindergarten class!

Adventures in Subbing #9 & #10
#9 ~
I've subbed this week in a kindergarten class. It's always fun to be in kindergarten, they are for the most part eager to please. My name is always a challenge for them, since they are in kindergarten, it's really useless to write it on the board, this is true sometimes in 1st grade also. So I introduce myself and then they either ask and ask, "what's your name?" or usually my name gets shorten to "Mrs Ham". Once one students calls me that, then they all do! So I've been Mrs Ham most of this week.
#10 ~
While I was in this kindergarten class, there was this noise from the hall way. The kids from the High school were coming for the recycling. There were a 3 little girls from my class that started in whispers "ooo, listen the high schoolers are here", then the excitement flowed through the class, "the high schoolers are here", " the high schoolers are here!" I just stood there amazed at their excitement at this noise. I even had one little boy say, 'you know my dad is a highschooler!" At that I went out into the hall, called THE HIGH SCHOOLERS into the classroom, and introduced them. This little kindergarten class was SO excited to have seen the high schooler. When 'high schoolers' left, one of the little girls that had started the whispers told me, "that was SO exciting seeing the Highschoolers."

Adventures in Subbing #8
Yesterday I was subbing in a my usual 2nd grade class, I'm her only substitute.
The class had been good and earned extra time at recess (I had duty) so we went out 5 minutes early, giving us time alone time on the playground. I was playing Tether ball with one boy when the ball hit him in the nose. He went playing but then began feeling his nose, I asked if needed a tissue, thinking that his nose was running. He said, "No, I think it's bleeding." it wasn't so we played on.
He kept touching his nose, and there finally was a small amount of blood. I sent him in for a tissue, but told him it was just a little bit and he'd be fine.
He came back out..... and then it gushed!
The school nurse was right inside the door, doing vision screenings so I sent him to her. Just as I opened the door for him, another student walked by and asked what had happened ~
AND THEN IT WAS SAID.....
"Mrs *, hit me in the face!"
